In the logic of a modern vehicle, however, this board is the only tether to reality. It represents the fixed point from which the car decides whether a shadow is a pothole or a child is a pedestrian. We ignore the ghost in the steering wheel because it’s easier than admitting we might have bought a discount on a safety feature we didn’t know we were losing.

In the end, the only real audit is the one that happens on a highway at eighty kilometers per hour, when the shadow of a bridge falls across the lane and the car has to decide, in a millisecond, what is real.
